I purchased the Mag 9 helmet in a large size for a 4 day riding trip from NC to central Kentucky. I have owned several bell helmets over the years and have got great use and protection out of them so I did not hesitate to buy the mag 9 (not the senna version) for my upcoming trip. The features and quality of the helmet impressed me, but after about 1hr into the ride I began to get the worst headache from where the helmet was to firm against my temples. I tried to push in the foam limning at each stop, but i never was able to get the helmet to break in. This made the trip an endurance event instead of a vacation. My head measures 22" using the bell measurement chart I purchased the large size. After 1600 miles of wearing this thing, I have put it in the closet and have gone back to wearing my old helmets. So the morale to the story, try on the helmet at a dealer because these great helmets are so durable, they will not break themselves in with wear. I have a great helmet that I can not use.
Bought the puppy a few weeks ago and have now fully road-tested it.
Pros: my Sena unit works very well with it. The speakers fit beautifully; Bell has cleverly facilitated removal of a bit of padding by the ears that allows room for the speakers in their own pockets--no ear hurt. Kudos!
Neither pro nor con: the sun beak (peak?) is fairly useless as it doesn't extend forward or downward enough. It shields your eyes when the sun is high enough not to matter. On the other hand, the drop-down shade works well. Wear sunglasses, drop the shade, and you can look into the setting sun.
Con: There's a flaw, which may be only on my helmet: wind-leak. With the shield down, there's substantial noise produced by air coming in from the lower 2" on the sides of the shield. I will experiment with some stick-on foam in the crevice and we'll see.
I bought this to replace my long time Mag-8. Had is one week and the unthinkable happened. Bike went down and I ended up a week in the hospital and several months recovering. NO HEAD INJURIES. The scars on the helmet leave me no doubt that this one saved my life. Now on my mantle and will be buying another!
